Southwark Foodbank

We have now supported the Southwark Foodbank for a number of years by collecting donations at our monthly meetings.

About The Foodbanks

The Southwark Foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust which runs a network of over 400 foodbanks across the UK.  The story of how the foodbank network was started is interesting and quite surprising – read the full story here. Whilst being the organisation is rooted in Christianity, the foodbanks operate without discrimination to help those of all races, religions and origins.

About The Southwark Foodbank

The Foodbank is a store of non-perishable food donated by the local community. They partner with frontline professionals such as schools, GPs, social services and many more, who refer fellow Southwark residents to their service.

After the referral agency confirms their client’s need, they give them a voucher. This voucher is then exchanged for food by one of the Foodbank’s volunteers at the Foodbank. The amount of food they give depends on the size of the family in need, and the type of voucher they have been given.

The Foodbank pride themselves on creating a friendly, welcoming place that offers free advice and signposting to other relevant support services. Working with the community, they help their service users tackle long-term issues, as well as the immediate crisis that led them to the Foodbank.

How Can You Help

Donate Food – Please bring any items you wish to donate to our monthly events. The Southwark Foodbank website provides both a list of other alternative donation points and a regularly updated list of items that they are especially in need of. The list often include personal hygiene items such as shampoo, toothbrushes and deodorant. We also circulate the updated list in each of our monthly newsletters.

Volunteer – There are a number of different volunteer roles which the Foodbank recruit for from warehouse volunteers to website editing. All the details of the current roles are available on the Southwark Foodbank website.

Donate Money – As with any such organisation, there are running costs involved in running the foodbank. Monetary donations both assist with these costs and helpo purchase food items to fill in gaps in donations. There are options for one off, regular and legacy donations.
